The lead screw rotates freely without the cross slide. I have taken things apart and reassembledĪ few times. The last two inches or so coming back to the wheel is very very stiff and requires deliberate intent to move it all the way back. I have everything moving nicely now except the cross carriage, which is muchīetter than it was last week, meaning that it moves, and smoothly, but still rather stiff. Now for the other stuff: the gibs were locked down so hard nothing moved. Seems like up to that point the machine was taken care of with great love.

Looks like somebody gave up the last year, or a new guy, but there is rust and crud which I am guessing is about a year’s worth. Reasonably good shape, but I am playing CSI-Hardinge right now with forensicĬleaning. Just bought an HVL-H from a factory closing. This is inĮffort to align the leadscrew as coaxially to the nut as possible.īoy am I glad this forum exists.

Then reattach the plate with the cross slide fully retracted. A possible fix in that situation is to remove the plate on the front of the cross slide and take out the two locating dowel pins. If the slide ways are worn such that the leadscrew is not preciselyĬo-axial with the nut, that's a separate problem. If it does that with the leadscrew removed, but binds with the screw in place, you've eliminated one cause. The cross slide should slide its full length of travel without binding. A check worth making is to pull out the leadscrew and fit the cross It sounds like you've already eliminated the slide ways and gib adjustment as the culprit. That it binds when moved to a lesser worn portion of the leadscrew such as toward the operator. There is a setscrew toward the back of the bronze nut which is designed to reduce cross slide backlash. Regarding resistance in moving the cross slide the last couple of inches, check the adjustment on the cross slide nut.
